The Neighborhood
Lawrence, Massachusetts is a diverse, vibrant and historic city located twenty miles north of Boston on the banks of the Merrimack River. First established as a textile manufacturing center in 1853, Lawrence still retains much of its nineteenth century architectural and urban character, from the mills and canals to the tree-lined downtown and common. The city today is home to a mix of large and small businesses, from New Balance and Malden Mills to start-up technology companies and mom-and-pop stores. A growing population hailing from all corners of the world, combined with hundreds of millions of dollars in public and private investments over the past decade, have created a new energy and vitality in the city. The newly renovated Veteran's Memorial Stadium, recently completed Lawrence High School and McGovern Transportation Center, and investments in the city's parks and open space have contributed to quality of life for residents and visitors alike. Lawrence is also home to a rich mix of arts and cultural groups, educational institutions, and sports programs, offering something for everyone. Located at the junction of Routes 93 and 495, the City of Lawrence is easily accessible by car and offers daily commuter rail service to Boston at the McGovern Transportation Center.
