Freqently Asked Questions

How do I know which class is right for my child?

Vaho will let you know which class is right for you. If your child has had fencing classes through a rec center or other club, Vaho will evaluate your child and then place him or her accordingly.

What age do kids have to be to start fencing classes at Penta?

We prefer to have kids be 8 years old before they start classes with us. That way, it's easier for them to follow the class directions and be an important part of the class group.

What should my child wear?

Class members should bring athletic shoes, preferably court shoes, to wear on the strip. No open toed shoes are allowed. Please don't wear your fencing shoes outside as we aim to keep the strips clean. You should wear warm-up pants and a tee shirt.

What about the fencing equipment?

Penta provides all the equipment necessary for beginners classes.

When should I get to Penta?

Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before the class start time so that you can sign in, get your shoes on and be ready to start on time.

Where do I park?

Plenty of parking is available outside of the building.

Are you hard to find?

No, not if you know where you're headed. First, we are on the second floor of our building at One Jewel Drive. Four buildings make up the complex. Make sure you turn onto Eames Street if you are coming up or down Route 38 – then take a right onto Jewel Drive. We're at the end of the long building on the right – enter through the last door on the right parallel to Jewel Drive. (There is another One Jewel Drive sign in front of Gymstreet that actually fronts on Route 38. Don't enter here!)

What if I want to buy my own equipment?

Talk to us and we will make recommendations to you.

Do I have to be a member of Penta to take classes?

No, participants in the beginner classes do not have to be club members.

Do I have to join the US Fencing Association?

No, this is not required for beginners. Intermediates and up are required to join. As a USFA member you will receive American Fencing magazine and are eligible to compete in USFA competitions if you wish.

What about private lessons?

We recommend that fencers start out in classes so that they learn the sport in a group setting. We don't recommend individual lessons until kids have been fencing for a year or so.
